Maumee
Woman in hospital
MAUMEE: A Wooster woman who stopped Thursday morning to help victims in a crash in Maumee was injured herself when a truck ran through the accident scene.
The Toledo Blade reported that Diana Dixon, 48, of Wooster, jumped from a freeway viaduct and fell onto the Ohio Turnpike median to avoid being hit by flying wreckage.
She was in critical condition at the University of Toledo Medical Center.
Three people at the scene were killed when the truck, hauling two trailers, crashed through wreckage from the earlier accident on Interstate 475/U.S. 23. No one had been seriously injured in the original accident.
The 5:25 a.m. collision shut down the busy freeway’s northbound lanes for more than eight hours while investigators from the State Highway Patrol sorted out what they termed a very complicated accident scene that left wreckage from cars, trucks and a motorcycle scattered over the highway.
Those killed were James South, 68, of Monclova Township, Ohio, the driver of a pickup involved in the initial accident; Dale Barnhiser, 52, of Grand Rapids, Ohio, a motorcyclist involved in the second collision; and Jodi Lubas, 40, of Maumee, who had stopped her car beyond South’s wrecked pickup to offer assistance.
